About Specified Skilled Worker

 

Specified Skilled Worker is a system aimed at accepting foreigners with a certain level of expertise and skills who can be immediately effective in the workplace in order to address Japan’s severe labor shortage.

In 2019, specified skills has been newly established, and the government recognized the employment of foreigners in the following 12 fields where there is a significant shortage of labor (nursing care / materials, industrial machinery, etc.). (June 21, 2022)

The “Specified Skilled Worker” category is admitted for the limit to a maximum of five years in total; a fully support by the receiving organization (or registered support organization) is obligatory; and the skills and Japanese language ability are verified through a test.

The difference between the “Technical Intern Training Program” and the ” Specified Skilled Worker ” is that the purpose of the ” Technical Intern Training Program ” is to contribute to the international community by allowing foreign nationals to acquire various Japanese skills through on-the-job training and then return to their home countries to spread those skills, while the ” Specified Skilled Worker ” is to accept foreign nationals with certain expertise and skills as workers for immediate employment to address labor shortages in certain industrial fields where it is difficult to secure human resources. In addition, a route is open for those who have successfully completed Technical Intern Training Program (No. 2) to change their status of residence to ” Specified Skilled Worker “.

~The main features of the Specified Skilled Worker are as follows
(1) The total period of stay is limited to a maximum of five years.
(2) Support by the receiving organization (or registered support organization) is obligatory.
(3) Skills and Japanese language ability are verified by an examination.
